The ES Evolution Series of locomotives, built by GE Transportation Systems, are designed to meet the U.S. EPAs Tier 2 locomotive emissions standards that became effective in 2005. These Evolution Series locomotives are powered by a newly designed GEVO12 12 cylinder engine and equipped with AC traction motors, which produce the same power as the 16 cylinder AC4400CW, but with fewer emissions and greater fuel economy. The distinctive oversized radiator, a common feature of these new locomotives, is made possible by the redesigned air-to-air dual-fan heat exchanger. While the AC version of the GEVO has been the most popular, some railroads, such as BNSF Railway, Canadian National, and CSX, have opted for the DC version.

The C4 variant of the ES44AC has an idler axle in the center of each truck, utilizing an A1AA1A wheel arrangement, in contrast to the all-wheel power of its ES44AC counterparts. This design provides the stability benefits of a six-axle truck while reducing the number of traction motors from 6 to 4.

Features include multiple body styles to reflect different railroad specifications, a powerful five-pole KATO motor with dual brass flywheels, directional headlight, illuminated preprinted number boards, illuminated ditch lights, and a Kato magnetic knuckle coupler.
