The MP36PH is a commuter service locomotive manufactured by Motive Power Inc (MPI), which is used by regional transit agencies throughout the United States and Canada. These distinctive locomotives operate on Metra train lines in Chicago, IL, running hourly commuter bi-level trains in push-pull service to and from downtown stations. They serve approximately 300,000 daily riders traveling to and from the surrounding suburbs.

Designed to operate pulling Nippon Sharyo Gallery Bi-Level Cars, the MP36PH locomotive utilizes a sophisticated lightpiping and LED system to provide directional headlight and taillight functions across all six of its nose lights. It also features illuminated pre-printed numberboards for push/pull operation.

The locomotive is equipped with a heavy-duty five-pole motor and mechanism, allowing it to pull a 10-car bi-level consist up a 4% grade without the need for a traction tire. Additionally, it is drop-in DCC compatible with the Train Control Systems K4D6.
