The E8 and E9 diesel locomotives, with their similar "bulldog nose" carbody style to the shorter and more popular F7, were powered by two separate 12-cylinder prime movers capable of producing 2250/2400 hp. These locomotives also rode on A-1-A trucks, which resulted in an exceptionally smooth ride favored by crews. Both the E8 and E9 were produced in A-units and cabless B-units, with the A-units usually built to railroad specification of either single or dual headlight and freight or passenger pilot, similar to the F3 and F7 of the same time period. They were utilized in both passenger and freight service, and featured a powerful five pole motor with all wheel electrical pickup and blackened wheels. These locomotives were made of metal and manufactured by Kato USA, with their country of origin being Japan.
