GE Transportation Systems builds the ES (Evolution Series) of locomotives, which are designed to meet the U.S. EPA’s Tier 2 locomotive emissions standards that came into effect in 2005. These Evolution Series locomotives are powered by a newly designed “GEVO-12” 12 cylinder engine and equipped with AC traction motors. Despite producing the same power as the 16 cylinder AC4400CW, they emit fewer emissions and offer greater fuel economy. Additionally, they feature a redesigned air-to-air dual-fan heat exchanger, resulting in an "oversized" radiator, which is a distinctive characteristic of these new locomotives.
