Amtrak, during its humble beginnings, acquired its passenger cars from various other railroads. These cars were old, steam-heated, and desperately in need of upgrades. In 1973, Amtrak made the decision to replace these outdated cars by purchasing the first batch of Amfleet cars from Budd. The initial set of 492 cars, known as the Amfleet I, featured a door and vestibule on each end, distinguishing them from their single-doored successors. These cars came in different variations, mainly as coach and dinette cars.
Despite the introduction of newer models, Amfleet I cars are still utilized by Amtrak, particularly for shorter distance routes. These cars come equipped with smooth rolling prototypical inside bearing trucks and sport Amtrak's most modern and current paint schemes. Customers also have the option to illuminate the cars with interior lighting LED kits, which are sold separately. It is worth noting that Amtrak is the official licensee of these cars, as both Amtrak and Amfleet are registered service marks of the National Railroad Passenger Corporation.
