The Chicago & North Western 400 Series Trains were named after the idea of a “400 mile trip in 400 minutes,” with the Twin Cities 400 between Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul being one of the most famous examples. In 1958, the C&NW began using Pullman’s new gallery Bi-Level cars on the Flambeau 400 and the Peninsula 400 trains, which were mid-distance trains. At that time, these two 400 trains were the only ones using these new cars. The unique designs of the cars allowed for higher rider capacity without sacrificing comfort, and provided superior elevated-viewing positions for those on the upper level. In addition to the standard Bi-level coaches, the two 400 trains also had a special Bi-Level Parlor Car and a Coach-Buffet Car to differentiate their service level from regular Chicago & North Western commuter trains. This was to meet the needs of riders on the longer distance trips, providing additional comforts and snack services to ensure that every one of those 400 minutes was as enjoyable as possible.
The locomotive has directional Golden White LED headlights and prototypical "Blanked out" numberboards, as well as a powerful five pole motor with all wheel electrical pickup and blackened wheels. It is also drop in DCC compatible. The cars are fully detailed inside and out, and can be illuminated with the optional Interior LED Lighting kit (sold separately).
