The "Amtrak Cities Sprinter", also known as the ACS-64, is Amtrak's replacement for the aging AEM-7 and HHP-8 electric locomotives used in the Northeast and Keystone Corridors. Built by Siemens and based on the European electric locomotive design EuroSprinter, the Cities Sprinter is a unique model in North America and is entirely manufactured in the United States.
The prototype, which entered service in February 2014, is capable of pulling up to 18 Amfleet cars at speeds of up to 125 miles per hour. This includes the Siemens ACS-64 locomotive and four new Amfleet I Cars. The locomotive features Amtrak's most modern and current paint schemes, and the cars can be illuminated with optional interior lighting LED kits that are sold separately. The packaging is elegant and suitable for storage and display when the train is not in operation.
This model is officially licensed by Amtrak, and both Amtrak and Amfleet are registered service marks of the National Railroad Passenger Corporation.
