Amtrak began its journey with hand-me-down passenger cars from other railroads. These cars were outdated, steam heated, and desperately in need of upgrades. In 1973, Amtrak took a significant step towards modernization by acquiring its first set of Amfleet cars from Budd to replace the aging fleet. The initial purchase consisted of 492 Amfleet I cars, which featured a door and vestibule on both ends, setting them apart from their single-doored successors. These cars came in various configurations, mainly as coach and dinette variants.
Despite the introduction of newer models, Amtrak still utilizes Amfleet I cars, especially on shorter distance routes. Equipped with smooth rolling prototypical inside bearing trucks, Amtrak's most modern paint schemes, and the option for interior lighting LED kits (sold separately), these cars have stood the test of time. They are also officially licensed by Amtrak, with Amfleet being a registered service mark of the National Railroad Passenger Corporation.
