The "Genesis" locomotive, also known as the General Electric P42, is a modern passenger locomotive with 4200 horsepower that is utilized in both the United States and Canada. It has replaced the EMD F40PH in revenue service for Amtrak and is now widely used throughout the United States. Over time, the P42 has undergone several physical revisions to make maintenance and parts replacements easier. For example, a bolt-on fiberglass nose panel, which replaced the original solid metal panel, has made it less difficult to repair or replace. Additionally, the locomotive now features a new, more rounded headlight bezel, as opposed to the previous square version.

The P42 is equipped with directional headlights and tail lights on both the front and rear of the locomotive, allowing it to function as both a standard pulling locomotive with double heading capability and a push-pull engine. It also has illuminated pre-printed numberboards and is capable of navigating minimum 370mm (14 3/5″) radius curves (R1 radius in Europe).
