The modern 4200-horsepower passenger locomotive, General Electric P42, is widely used in the United States and Canada, particularly by Amtrak in a majority of their revenue service. In 2021, Amtrak celebrated its 50th Anniversary by creating five unique paint schemes for its P42 engines. One of them, #160, features a phase III paint scheme that pays homage to Amtrak’s “Dash 8” locomotives along with the anniversary logo. Each locomotive is designed to honor Amtrak’s heritage and its vision of connecting communities, economies, and families nationwide.
The P42 locomotive is equipped with directional headlights and tail lights on both the front and rear, enabling it to function as both a standard pulling locomotive with double heading capability and a push-pull engine. Additionally, it features illuminated pre-printed numberboards and is capable of navigating minimum 370mm (14 3/5″) radius curves (R1 radius in Europe). Its coreless truck-motor drive is paired with a super-heavy solid metal body mechanism. Notably, the locomotive is officially licensed by Amtrak.
